![]() We're Growing Great Gardeners at IVE!
Objective: Growing Great Gardeners is a PTA sponsored enrichment program designed specifically for first grade students. Children will learn about plants and the importance of nutrition while practicing simple gardening techniques using sustainable methods. First graders will have the opportunity to work outdoors to grow vegetables in a raised garden bed maintained by their class. Salad greens have proven to provide the most success, therefore, will be the focus for spring 2013. At the culmination of the season, students will harvest their produce and enjoy a "Salad Celebration". Timeframe: One hour per class the first week of each month, February - June. 2012-13 Co-Chairs and Contact Info:
Opportunities to Volunteer: Become a classroom Garden Docent! Every month during spring, help our first graders plant a lovely salad garden and maintain their raised bed. This is a fabulous job for first grade parents but all are welcome. No gardening experience is necessary. All materials and training will be provided. Garden volunteers may also help maintain the raised garden beds by weeding and composting in the fall and clean-up/weeding around the beds in the spring. If you are looking for a flexible and casual opportunity to volunteer with other parents, this is a great way to get involved! Spring is rapidly approaching and we look forward to beginning student instruction the first week of February. In order to prepare, we will have a Garden Docent Training on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 7:30 PM. An email with more information will be sent to any docents who signed-up in September. If you missed that sign-up opportunity and are interested in volunteering, please contact Tara or Victoria and we will add you to the list.
