It’s time for IVE students to express their creativity through visual and written art with this years’ National Reflections Competition. The theme this year is Heroes Around Me.

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. Young artists get involved through their local PTA. A student may submit an entry in any of the arts areas supported by their school. Only original works of art are accepted.

IVE is participating in three art categories this year: Visual Arts, Photography, and Literature. Submissions should be original pieces made for this competition, inspired by this years’ theme.  Artists must submit a 100 word artist statement explaining how their submission reflects the theme.

All entries must be turned into the Reflections Box in the front office by November 1, 2018

We will be selecting 12 submissions to move on to the district competition, and will be honoring these 12 artists as well as ALL participants at our Reflections Celebration which is combined with our Hands on Art Night November 15 from 6-8pm.

We wanted to mention 2 very important tips as you prepare to create your submission:

First, entries in visual arts and photography must be mounted on a RIGID (not floppy) backing. Foam core, sturdy cardboard, or mat board work great for this. The art can measure no bigger than 24x30 inches and 1⁄2 inch thickness, including matting. We recommend entries be covered with a cellophane wrap for protection and entry form should be in plastic sheet protector or plastic sleeve attached to back.

Second is a reminder about copyright issues which is going to be important this year given the theme of“Heroes”. Students are not allowed to use known famous characters as the central focus of their submission, and this would include any of the popular superhero movie characters (Superman, Spiderman, Batman, ect) as well as any other famous character (Disney characters, etc) or even well know musicians, artists, etc. The district is anticipating more than normal disqualifications for copyright violations this year, and we really don’t want to pull any IVE art from consideration! SO if in you have ANY questions about the subject of your art possibly breaking copyright rules, PLEASE email us and we can help you make sure your piece meets the requirements and can be considered for advancement to the district competition.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing what you create!
