Volunteer Opportunities

The Art Docent Program is volunteer led art instruction. Docents teach approximately eight lessons a year in grades K-5. Docents introduce a variety of artists and expose students to multiple artistic mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, printmaking, clay  and more.  Volunteers do not need to be artists or possess skills in all artistic disciplines; only a passion for the arts and a willingness to learn and have fun along with the students.

The IVE PTA Art Docent Program supports the state’s Visual ArtsGrade Level Expectations K-5, the Common Core, 21st Century Thinking Skills and Habits of the Mind while offering students a positive experience with art by exposing them to various materials and artists. Volunteer Art Docents introduce the elements of art and principles of design, art vocabulary, art criticism, art history and art’s intersection with culture. Students gain essential experience being creative in an open-ended environment.

The IVE PTA funds this program and guides our approach to art education in our school.

The Issaquah School District has well over 550 PTA volunteer Art Docents each year providing more than 8,500 hours of volunteer instruction at the elementary school level.

These programs fill the gap between what the state and district funding provides and what our students require.  We truly appreciate the generosity of the Issaquah School District, principals, classroom teachers, and parents who support our PTAs and in turn our Art Docent Programs.

Opportunities to Volunteer:

Art Docent for a Class

We recruit art docents volunteers for each classroom.

Lead Docent volunteers are asked to plan, coordinate and implement one age appropriate art lesson a month from October to May in his/her assigned classroom.  Volunteers are provided with age, stage and grade appropriate art lessons and program support. Volunteers should have a passion for the arts, enjoy working with students, and be able to work cooperatively with other volunteers and teachers.

You may also come to assist each lesson and help the Lead Docent with tasks related to the lessons.

Contact the Art Docent Program Administrator at and your student's teacher to let us know you'd like to help assist or lead lessons.

Hands On Art Night at IVE November 15th, 6-8 pm
